Pneumocystosis B59-

Pneumocystosis B59-

Applicable To

  • Pneumonia due to Pneumocystis carinii
  • Pneumonia due to Pneumocystis jiroveci

Clinical Information

  • Pulmonary disease in humans, particularly affecting those who are immunodeficient, malnourished, or infants, is characterized by symptoms such as dyspnea (difficulty breathing), tachypnea (rapid breathing), and hypoxemia (low blood oxygen levels). One notable example is Pneumocystis pneumonia, an opportunistic infection commonly seen in AIDS patients. This condition is caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii. Similar diseases are also observed in other mammals, caused by related Pneumocystis species.
  • Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is a form of pneumonia resulting from infection with Pneumocystis carinii, frequently affecting immunocompromised individuals such as those with AIDS, steroid-treated patients, the elderly, or premature or debilitated infants during their first three months. Patients may exhibit minimal or no fever but are likely to experience significant weakness, difficulty breathing, and cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin due to lack of oxygen). This condition is a major cause of illness among AIDS patients.
  • Pulmonary disease in humans occurring in immunodeficient or malnourished patients or infants, characterized by dyspnea, tachypnea, and hypoxemia; pneumocystis pneumonia is a frequent opportunistic infection in aids; also found in other mammals where it is caused by related species of pneumocystis.
