Clinical Information

  • Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is transmitted through vaginal, oral, or anal intercourse. Many infected individuals may not show symptoms. In males, symptoms can include a burning sensation during urination, discharge from the penis, and painful swelling of the testes. In females, symptoms can include painful urination, vaginal discharge, and bleeding between periods. If left untreated, the infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Acute infectious disease characterized by primary invasion of the urogenital tract. The etiologic agent, neisseria gonorrhoeae, was isolated by neisser in 1879.
  • Acute infectious disease characterized by primary invasion of the urogenital tract; the etiologic agent is neisseria gonorrhoeae.
  • Gonorrhea is a curable sexually transmitted disease most commonly seen in young adults. The bacteria responsible for gonorrhea can infect the genital tract, mouth, or anus. Symptoms are not always present, particularly in women. Men with gonorrhea may experience painful urination and discharge from the penis. If left untreated, it can lead to epididymitis, which affects the testicles and may result in infertility. In women, gonorrhea can cause bleeding between periods, painful urination, and increased vaginal discharge. Untreated gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause pregnancy complications and infertility. Gonorrhea can also be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy. Antibiotics prescribed by your healthcare provider can cure gonorrhea. Using latex condoms correctly can significantly reduce, but not completely eliminate, the risk of transmitting or contracting gonorrhea. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
