Clinical Information

  • An infectious fungal disease that occurs most often in the skin, ears, nasal sinuses, and lungs of people with suppressed immune systems.
  • Aspergillosis is a disease caused by a common environmental fungus or mold. There are different types of aspergillosis. One type is allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), which causes symptoms like wheezing and coughing. While ABPA can affect healthy individuals, it is most prevalent in people with asthma or cystic fibrosis.
  • Another type is invasive aspergillosis, which invades and damages body tissues, typically affecting the lungs but potentially spreading to other organs. This form primarily impacts individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those who have had a transplant, are taking high doses of steroids, or are undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.
  • To diagnose aspergillosis, your doctor may perform various tests, including a chest X-ray, CT scan of the lungs, or tissue examination for signs of the fungus. Treatment involves antifungal medications.
  • For more information, refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Disease condition caused by species of aspergillus and marked by inflammatory granulomatous lesions in the skin, ear, orbit, nasal sinuses, lungs, and sometimes in the bones and meninges.
  • Infections with fungi of the genus aspergillus.
